With news reports in the last while full of announcements about barriers to trade and challenges with both exporting to and importing from the U.S., our major trading partner, I began thinking about all the wonderful products and services that are at our fingertips. Naturally, I think about women-owned businesses and started making a list in my head. Then I came across an announcement about Food Day Canada which is an annual celebration of Canadian food, focusing on makers, farmers, chefs and restaurants.
In celebration of Food Day Canada which takes place this year on August 4, I started another list, this time of Manitoba women who are contributing their expertise and skills to food production in our province. My list is nowhere near exhaustive which is where you come in – I’m hoping that you will add to the list and together we can celebrate the local women who are feeding us. This is what I have so far. In the comments section below, share your additions to the list and please include a little information about your suggestion along with a link to their online presence.
Arabelle’s Bakery – Home of the Lagos Loaf Bread (a staple in African diets) and a wonderful selection of sweet and savoury treats.
COBS Bread – Fresh, handcrafted bread and treats featured in the first Manitoba location to be locally owned and operated.
Double Take Cakes and Desserts – Twin sisters Valerie and Victoria are the driving forces behind this Steinbach bakery that can satisfy your sweet tooth and savoury cravings.
Eiffel Tower Pastry Shop & Catering – A Winnipeg institution making cakes, pastries, cookies, tortes and of course stunning wedding cakes! They also hand-sculpt 3D shape cakes.
High Tea Bakery – Creator of one-of-a-kind custom cookies, cakes, cupcakes and all things wedding are created with the utmost attention to detail.
Hildegard’s Bakery – Out of their wood-fired brick oven comes a delicious selection of bread and pizza using organic flours and grains.
Jenna Rae Cakes – Cake designer Jenna Rae and twin sister/photo stylist Ashley Nicole own this elegant bakery known for its colourful and delicious freshly baked treats and cakes.
Oh Doughnuts – Bakes up deliciously unique gourmet doughnuts with flavours that change every day.
Old Church Bakery – Artisan breads are the feature at this bakery located in Steinbach. Sourdough cultures and long fermentation give this handmade and hearth-baked bread tremendous flavour!
sweet C bakery – Famous for their candy sushi which has a worldwide audience, they have two locations in Winnipeg.
Sweet Impressions – Baked from scratch, decorated by hand and 100% nut free.
Sweet Retreat – Specializes in desserts, cupcakes, wedding cakes and even a selection of dog treats.
The Pennyloaf Bakery – A former city planner turns her skills to baking an array of breads in her wood burning oven.
Fools + Horses Coffee – Broadway and The Forks are home to the two locations of this upbeat coffee bar with a seasonal menu built using the products of local suppliers and producers.
Joe Black Coffee Bar – A hip and cozy location featuring carefully brewed beverages and a menu of savoury options to match.
Scout: Coffee + Tea Shop – Kid-friendly coffee shop that offers great locally sourced products and a creative space for children to play.
Wolseley Kombucha – Winnipeg’s first locally brewed kombucha, a fermented beverage with health benefits.

Chaeban Ice Cream – Husband and wife partners have developed a selection of ice cream creative flavours all made from scratch.

Aschenti Cocoa – Manitoba’s first farm to bar chocolate maker that delivers luxurious chocolate that uses the highest quality ingredients and is made without additives.
Alicja Confections – Home of the postcard chocolate bar that you can send in the mail.
Chocolatier Constance Popp – Since 2007, Winnipeg’s first bean to bar chocolatier creates premium fresh artisan chocolates, pastries and frozen treats.

FARMERS & MARKETS
Crampton’s Market – Since 1997, they have been working with a network of more than 100 Manitoba farmers to source the freshest seasonal produce. They also have an in-house bakery.
Luna Field Farm – Specializes in pasture-raised chicken, grass fed lamb and beef, pastured eggs and forest-raised pork.
Wildfire Farms – Raises natural grass fed and finished beef, and naturally raised chicken and pork.
Watersong Farm – Located in the Interlake, this farm features a state-of-the-art indoor river teeming with thousands of steelhead trout. They also produce whole roasting chickens and host farm-to-table dinners.

Canadian Birch Company – From pristine birch forests on the shores of Lake Winnipeg comes the finest birch sap and syrup in the world.
Frescolio – Family-owned fine oil and vinegar tasting bar. Two locations in Winnipeg.
Prairie Oils & Vinegars – This is Manitoba’s first oil and vinegar tasting room. They follow the olive crush in the northern and southern hemispheres to provide customers with the most recently produced and healthiest oils available. Stores in Steinbach and Winkler.
Preserve by flora and farmer – Delightfully daring preserves your grandma never made. Owner/chef Kim offers up a delectable sampling of local fare in her commercial Winnipeg kitchen
Smak Dab – Entrepreneur and Red Seal Chef, Carly has created a collection of intriguing mustards that elevate good food to great food with contrasting textures and flavours that surprise, excite and inspire.
Solberry -Maker of Sea Buckthorn Puree, one of the world’s most nutritionally complete foods.
Alycia’s – An iconic Winnipeg restaurant known for Ukrainian comfort food, particularly perogies.
And a Cupcake Too – Small restaurant in downtown Winnipeg serving breakfast and lunch on weekdays. Wednesday is cinnamon bun day!
