Manitoba Mondays – Souris
Staying close to home this summer? If you are planning on exploring our beautiful and vast province this season, why not show some love and support to our incredible entrepreneurial community of women?
#ManitobaMondays can help! It’s our second season of the series where we share weekly highlights of women-owned and partnered businesses to add to your must-see list while you #exploreMB.
Today we are taking you to a town in Western Manitoba, home to Canada’s longest swinging pedestrian bridge.
Located on Treaty 2 territory, the town of Souris (originally named Plum Creek) is a popular local destination with its beautiful walking trails, resident peacocks and a fantastic quarry. While in town, you’ll want to explore the many nature trails by taking a stroll through the beautiful 50-acre Victoria Park.
This vibrant community of over 2,500 residents also provides great potential for new and growing businesses in the Souris-Glenwood region. Follow along with our last #ManitobaMondays edition this season as we explore Souris and the many women-owned and partnered businesses you can support while uncovering the beauty and possibilities of this town!
Stop #1 | Minary Homestyle Bakery
Our first stop of the day in Souris is extra sweet. Ask any local about must-visits in Souris and the Minary Homestyle Bakery will surely come up!
Owned by the Minary Family, the bakery is known far and wide for its from-scratch apple fritters; a delicious treat that draws in visitors from across the province (and even beyond).
Stop #2 | Hicks Farms
While the season for berry picking has come and gone, there’s another fun activity to be had at Hicks Farms, located just west of the town of Souris.
Owned by Susan and Steven Hicks, the farm now offers u-pick flowers. Wander the fields and choose from over 40 varieties of flowers to create your own colourful, custom bouquet.
Stop #3 | Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Art
Find something extra special to remember your visit to Souris by stopping into Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Art. Owned by Kathleen LaGasse, the shop is a thoughtful curation of beautiful products from artisans and artists.
The studio also frequently hosts painting workshops (including a paddle-painting class) so be sure to call ahead if you’d like to attend one of the upcoming scheduled events.
Stop #4 | River Rat Rentals
Get one more paddle in before the summer is through. Caleigh Walker and Cassie Quadrelli are the entrepreneurs behind River Rat Rentals, offering canoes, sit-on kayaks, sit-in kayaks, paddle boards and water mats.
Find them at the boat dock in Victoria Park and be sure to send them a message ahead of time to ensure your rental!
Stop #5 | Rustic Retreat
There’s so much to see and do in Souris — why not stay the night? Located just southwest of Souris, Rustic Retreat is a place to get away from it all.
Owner Jody Henderson has created an incredibly quaint accommodation that will make you truly appreciate Manitoba’s rural beauty. There are several cabins available to book; the Rustic Cabin, the River Cabin and the Big House.
Time for some shout outs!
With so many women-owned businesses in this town, we wanted to give a few more local shoutouts to:
1 – Sadler’s Creekside Greenhouse – Owned by Crystal Page and Gerry Sadler, this gorgeous greenhouse will thrill all plant enthusiasts. The greenhouse is closed for August and will reopen in September 2021.
2 – Souris Farmers’ Market – Taking place every Saturday until September 25, the Souris Farmers’ Market is an excellent place to shop from a variety of local artisans and food producers. Find the market at the town parking lot behind Crescent Avenue.
And that’s a wrap! Thank you so much for tuning in to our second season of the #ManitobaMondays campaign! We had such a great time creating these virtual adventures and learning about women-owned and partnered businesses in rural and northern locations across Manitoba.
