Business Breakfast May 2019: Making Friends and Influencing People

Best friends Amanda Buhse and Tom Jansen started making candles as a way to spend time together. That hobby has transitioned into the very successful Coal and Canary. The business has grown dramatically over the last five years and now employs 15 people who together ensure the products get to their 250 retailers. In March 2019, the founders were recognized as the winners of the Trade Category at the Spirit of Winnipeg Awards.

From the beginning, Tom and Amanda set out to establish a brand that people could relate to. Along the way they have made the most of Instagram with clever, behind-the-scenes posts, included products in Oscars and Grammys gift bags, and secured a collection of influencers to help spread the word. Join Tom and Amanda to learn more about their creative approach to ‘making friends and influencing people’.
